Prepping Your Space for a Paint Project

Colder months of the year can make outdoor projects harder to do, and even limited. Painting interior walls is the easiest way to freshen up your place and is a good project to do when it’s cold out. Preparing the surface, as well as other practices before you start painting can smoothen the process. Below you will find some tips on what to do before dipping your brush straight into the can.

Clearing the Area- Emptying the space or room you plan on painting is the first step. This includes things such as furniture, pictures, hardware, rugs, lighting fixtures and anything else that you don’t plan on painting. Cover anything else that can’t be removed with plastic sheeting.

Protecting the Floor- Place tape along the bottom of baseboards, then tape a wide border of rosin paper to this strip of tape. Cover the rest of the floor with plastic sheeting or a canvas drop cloth to prevent any spilled paint to get on unwanted surfaces.

Fixing Imperfections- Check the walls for any cracks, holes, or gaps. Patch the cracks or holes with flexible patching compound, or joint compound and mesh tape on wide cracks. To fill gaps, use a caulk and run a wet finger on it to smooth it out.

Sanding- Scuff any unsmooth parts of your, moldings, doors, windows and walls with sandpaper sheets or a drywall sander. After you’re done sanding, remove sanding dust with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter, then finish cleaning up with by a damp rag.
